Art, I believe, is a conversation. The art isn't in the thing that the artist has created, it's in the interaction between the artist and the audience. The thing that the artist has created is simply the vehicle through which that interaction is possible. Imagine, to look at Michelangelo's David, for example, is in some sense to be in the presence of the master himself. He speaks to us through the work, and through the ages, and we speak to him too simply by looking, by paying attention, by appreciating and trying to understand.
